WHAT IS SPEECH?

Speech is the verbal means of communicating. Speech consists of the following:

  • Articulation - How speech sounds are made

  • Voice - Use of the vocal folds and breathing to produce sound

  • Fluency - The rhythm of speech

WHAT IS LANGUAGE?

Language is what we speak, write, read, and understand. It is also how we communicate socially.

  • Receptive Language - how we understand others

  • Expressive Language - sharing thoughts, ideas, and the vocabulary we use to do so

  • Social Language - gestures, body language, and purpose language (greetings, farewells, requests, etc.)
